"I am able to change the lemon of my life into lemonade."

Since 1969, Self Help Addiction Rehabilitation, Inc. (SHAR) has provided the needed substance abuse services for the residents of the City of Detroit and its surrounding suburbs. SHAR’s programs are nationally known, and commonly thought of as “tough”. We do not apologize for that – it has been designed that way.

We recognize the devastation that the disease of addiction causes on our families, communities, and our society. There is a vast body of literature showing the link between substance abuse, crime, and numerous social ailments. Over the last 25 years the Michigan prison population has more than tripled with approximately half of those incarcerated being substance dependent, and many more being locked up for drugs or other non-assaultive offenses. Research has demonstrated that offenders, once released, are very prone to relapse and recidivism when their underlying issues are not sufficiently addressed.  Since our inception, SHAR has demonstrated expertise in working with the criminal justice population.  We are proud of our track record of successfully administering contracts in prisons, jails and in the community for prisoners, probationers, and parolees.   We believe in self-help, behavioral change, tough love, empathy and other principles that promote personal growth and responsibility.  Utilizing the Therapeutic Community (TC) model of treatment, our continuum of services is designed to transition the offender into a productive, contributing member of society.

SHAR provides a wide range of specialized programs and services as diverse as the populations we serve and the problems they bring. We take great pride in our ability to provide effective treatment services to men, women, women with children, the employed, the unemployed, correctional clients and individuals with co-occurring disorders, HIV/AIDS, homeless, or suffering from any  other number of social problems.  Although programs evolve based on need and resources, central to service delivery are the following 4 core program components.
